Lovely as an angel, beautiful as a rose— don’t ever quit taking delight in her body. Never take her love for granted!

Proverbs 5:19, The Message

I love the beautiful flowery language used here to describe the wife but ambivalently hate the removal of the erotic language. The word “breasts” is completely gone and replaced with “body” and the fatherly exhortation to engage in an ANR is completely lost in translation. Versions like the ESV or NIV don’t do ANR justice, but The Message doesn’t even come close. Further, the original Hebrew manuscript ended the verse with “err” or “be led astray always in her love.”

This is a good example of why many believers think The Message has its strengths but also some extremely serious flaws.
