Lovely as an angel, beautiful as a rose— don’t ever quit taking delight in her body. Never take her love for granted!

Proverbs 5:19, The Message

I love the beautiful flowery language used here to describe the wife but ambivalently hate the removal of the erotic language. The word “breasts” is completely gone and replaced with “body” and the fatherly exhortation to engage in an ANR is completely lost in translation. It’s bad enough that versions like the ESV or NIV don’t do ANR justice, but The Message just takes the idea away altogether. Further, the original Hebrew manuscript ended the verse with “err,” or “be led astray always in her love.”

This is a good example of why many believers think The Message has a few strengths but also a large amount of extremely serious flaws.
