The secret to walking in, or by, the Spirit

Walk by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

— Galatians 5:16

The secret to doing this is to keep in step with the Spirit:

25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

Notice the word “by” occurs once in each verse. It just dawned on me that to “walk by” something or someone means to walk “with the aid of” said person or thing, how an injured or handicapped person relies on crutches or support persons. Injured and handicapped is precisely what we are vis-à-vis the Holy Spirit.

Also, to “live by” someone or something is to abide by the same, reminiscent of the language Jesus used in John 15. It’s amazing how Scripture interprets and points to itself.

So rely on Him. He is your lifeline. Your eternal crutch. Your Paraclete, your counselor. Your comforter. Trust Him like an actual Person, because He is an actual Person. Follow in His footsteps. Be in His bonds. Follow His lead and prodding. Walk lockstep with Him.

Watch Him flow abundantly into you like rivers of living water, and override your thoughts and actions. Your heart will be much more filled with the love and joy of Jesus Christ, and you’d live an increasingly holy life.
